The Meissen Porcelain Factory produces very high quality, hand-painted porcelain, and has done so for over 300 years. Since the 1860s, the factory has been on it's current site in the town of Meissen. The Visitor Centre contains a demonstration area, museum, shop and cafe/restaurant. The cafe and shop can be accessed without a ticket but the remainder require you... More

The tour takes you through the museum and then through a series of small theatre/lecture rooms where you can watch one of the craftsmen/women working on each of the manufacturing stages. This latter stage of the tour, observing the skill and artistry that goes into the manufacture, was interesting but (for me) the museum part, with the lengthy and detailed... More

The tour of Porzellanmanufaktur Meissen is a must see if your travels bring you to the area. It consists of two parts. The first is a four-part demonstration of how Meissen Porcelain is created, moving from the mixing of kaolin and other base materials to make the paste, to the shaping and adornment of the objects, to the firing, and... On our recent visit to Germany we chose to stop at the Meissen Porcelain factory and museum on our way out of Dresden town. It is about 30 minutes by car from Dresden and it was an extremely interesting visit. They have been making beautiful porcelain objects at this location for hundreds of years. To be sure they do not... More

Every wonder what a $75,000 vase looks like? Where it's made? How it's made? Where to buy one? Just kidding! This is the place to go. I'm usually more of the outdoor adventure type, but I'm glad I stopped by. I've seen the logo (dueling swords) around lots of really posh areas but never paid much attention. When someone is... More

We were told at the entrance that the only way to enter the premises was via a 9 Euro per person ticket. We went for it, and were led through several rooms where obviously talented workers showed the creation of a piece of porcelain step-by-step. This was very well done. We were then taken to the showroom, where things -... More

If you want to see how porcelain is made and the finest collection of it anywhere there is the place to visit. The museum has also changed a lot in the past few years and the shop has things for all pockets from the tourist wanting a momento to the people who can splice out tens of thousands!

Don't miss such a wonderful collection of Saxony porcelains. In addition to museum exhibition there is a great workshop to demonstrate how these masterpieces are made by hand (still!). There is a possibility to take English-guided workshop - nice :-)

Unless you're really interested in how they paint/sculpt porcelain, there is no need to purchase the tour to see the museum. The tour is pretty much like any other "free" tours when you go on bus tours all over Europe at any other tourist traps (i.e. Holland cheese factory, Venice glass shops, Amsterdam diamond shops, etc.). However, this place is... More
