Ramparts are really massive. They encircle the entire town for defense. You can also walk around the city on top of the ramparts. The former gates and moats are also impressive.
We stayed inside the castle walls for two nights and three days. We had a great time exploring during the day and night. The food was great, the medieval city was fantastic, and the wine was even better. For an adult getaway this is a great place.
Echoes of a turbulent time in the history of SW France. Still an imposing structure and a pleasant lack of restraints or areas closed off. When the wind blows it is exposed on the walls take care!
This is an unmissable attraction in Carcassonne. You could walk around the walled city for days and perhaps most of what you see would be the shops and restaurants! We went out of season, yet the castle was still busy. Ignore all the touristy shops and restaurants and search out the little gems in the side streets. The walk around the ramparts and castle inner walls to appreciate the size of the building.Fantastic views over Carcassonne.
This is fascinating. I can really recommend the audio guide to give you a feel for this place and its history, but be prepared to spend at least three hours there. Ensure your camera is fully charged! Really beautifully done, but be prepared for information overload!
