This is a gorgeous and atmospheric medieval town. Lovely shops and restaurants but the city itself is the reason for the visit. As you walk around the walled town you can really sense the past as though the ghosts of centuries past are calling out at you. It's truly lovely.

If walls could talk... It was lovely to explore and reflect on the history of the City. It was alive by day and quiet at night.

Beautifully restored castle gives a wonderful insight into how people lived long ago. Well worth a couple of hours walking the streets and battlements. Lots of restaurants, and gift shops selling everything from fine art to plastic Templar swords.

There is no admission charge for this great place. Stay close to the old city like at the Mercure and walk to the fortress an hour before sunset, again at night and then in the morning to see it in many different lights. Great shopping. Reasonable prices on many things, Lots of restaurants, fun alleyways, nice cathedral.

The Cité of Carcassonne is breathtaking and is better visited on foot. The parking is old fashioned, far down and has a crazy pay system. The first hour is free, but from one hour to five hours, it is a fixed price of 6 euros. We stayed one hour and 6 minutes and paid 6 euros at 6 PM. It... More

An absolute gem for photographers, amazing buildings and light, even in the rain. What a wonderful place to just wander and meander the narrow cobbled streets.

Untouched by any European conflict for centuries, Carcassonne is a marvelous trip into French history. Ancient church, castle, rambling streets and wondrous shops and other attractions make this one of Southeast France's peerless treasures.

The old city is stunningly beautiful from outside and atmospheric within. Exactly as it must have been in the middle ages. We took a trip in a miniature train that drives around the periphery of the city and had an excellent audio tour guide. Inside, we went on a fascinating tour around the castle and ramparts, which has amazing views... More

A return visit to La Cite for the third time for me. This walled city is like an old friend, whom you would not leave the city of Carcassonne without visiting. It is immaculately maintained in as near original condition as possible complete with little alleys and endless shops and restaurants tucked in every nook and cranny. Despite the thousands... More
