The Font-de-Gaume cave is a marvellous example of prehistoric art from the Madgalenian period with a truly remarkable group of polychrome wall paintings and engravings. For reasons of conservation, the number of visitors is limited to 180 each day with a maximum of 12 people per group. Cave of the Vezere valley designated world heritage site by UNESCO. Open:> 15th May to 15th September: from 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.> 16th September to 14th May: from 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. Last visit at 4 p.m. Open in accordance with conservation necessities. Closed:> Saturdays.> 1st January, 1st May, 1st November, 11th November and 25th December. Admission fees: Adults : 7,50 €; Concessions (18 to 25) = 4,50 €; Free admission: minors under 18*; Free admission: 18-25 years old* (citizens of one of the 27 countries of the EU or are non-European permanent residents of France) * excluding school groups

Do ad this to your itinerary, and be prepared to get to the ticket office on site early, as only 80 people a day are allowed in.
This is the only cave system with original coloured cave drawings still open to the public. The pictures are amazing - very beautiful and delicate. The guide was very good. We went on...

Even in April you will need to queue up by 830AM (and it's recommended as 8-830AM on the webpage for high season. Do not miss this Paleolithic cave. The polychrome paintings are superb. Visit it with a double ticket for Les Combarelles (cave with engravings). Be warned - only a small number of visitors are allowed each day and you can no longer book in advance. Look at the web site for conditions.

Wonderful, authentic, breathtaking. Book and pay in advance and savor the valley before and after the tour. Lascaux is fine, but this is the real deal....a "bucket list" item for sure!

We turned up at 3.30pm on a Sunday at the beginning of February- clearly the best time of year to visit as it was free and we joined a family of 3 for an English tour within 15 mins of arriving.....
It was a fascinating tour and our 3 children were enchanted by the stories. Definitely worth a visit but...

We weren't able to buy the tickets online, but if you are there one hour before they open (and you don't mind queueing...) there are limited tickets on sale every morning, not only for the Font-de-Gaume, but for the other prehistoric sites in Les Eyzies. We were told to get here early because there is a limit on the number of entrants each day and we are lucky we did. The queue was already over 20 people long and so it's definitely advisable to get here early. Once inside the actual caves the prehistoric drawings were incredible, even if you had to stare at some...
