The cemetery is close to my home and is a great little place to go for a jog or take the dogs for a walk. Everything except the entrance is overgrown and most of the buildings have fallen into disrepair and boarded against entry. You can incorporate the Frog Walk into your visit as the river and the walk run... More

This is one of the oldest cemteries in the city. It has become rather wild and overgrown over the years although attempts have been made to restore it as much as possible. There is so much history of our City's past to be foun here. There are the graves of many names that were once well known in the city,... More

Can't decide if it makes the cemetery the fact that it is in such bad repair, or if it should attract funding to repair it... Just a quick visit makes you realise how important death was to the Victorians, and how well they mourned... So many important engineers graves, such as the Firth grave where the creators of Stainless Steel... More

On the first Sunday of every month at 2.00 p.m. there's a free guided tour of this historic cemetery, highlighting its history (opened in the 1830s) and recounting the lives of some of those buried in the graves. The guide is excellent and very informative, he kept the group's interest throughout the tour (which lasts about 1 and a quarter... More

I live on the doorstep of the Gen Cem and despite hacing visited it many, many times I am always drawn back to it. A lot of the paths have been cleared and there is a large, open green area for ball sports or picnicing, so ignore the bad review! There is also a lot of interesting undergrowth to explore... More

Its cold, dank and quite dirty - not a place for children or a picnic - nothing to see apart from some nice popular foliage

A cemetary doesn't strike you as the first place you would choose to wander through or go for a stroll but this one is different; its more of a journey back in time and can really get the imagination flowing (writers take note) If you are in the area and fancy a walk down from Sharrow to Ecclesall Road (or... Spent an enjoyable hour searchnig for th grave of an ancestor - I love this sort of place - lots of history and atmosphere - but some wouldn't (a cemetery). If you're looking for an ancestor there is a good index online but there's no chance of finding a grave without the help of a volunteer (donation required) because the... More
