Visited this site at the weekend, the weather was lovely, quite warm. Ideal place for a picnic, there are no facilities so bring your own food/drink. We did not and by the end of the walk around the wall we were parched. We missed the amphitheater when walking round the wall, so we used the car to drive back to... More

A surprising amount of Roman wall remains, as well as an amphitheatre, set among the English countryside and with great old architecture all around (in the form of churches, etc.), make this a great day out, especially when the weather's nice. Not the easiest to get to via public transport but it can be done, especially if you don't mind... More

We discovered Silchester 'by accident' as we passed it cycling on National Cycle Route 23. As its a failry large Roman town that was completely abandoned in the fifth century, the main thing you can see is the massive ancient and very worn city wall, and the amphitheater. There is an excellent website from University of Reading (which also does... More

Lovely open countryside for walking around the site and not many people. Looking forward to visiting again when the weather improves. The walk is on the flat for those who may struggle with a hilly terrain.

Before you go, download the audio guide from the English Heritage website, it is great and really adds to the visit and makes sure you don't miss anything. We spent a good hour or so wandering around, visiting the amphitheatre and learning about the place. Best visited when there is nice weather as there is nowhere to shelter!

The roman town is a good 20mins drive from Reading and 5mins from the car park. But it's worth it to have a walk around the walls of the old town. Being so remote it remains relatively unspoilt; there's no plastic walkway, gift shop, audio tour, or any other of the perfunctory tourist treats. When you're there you can see... More

Fun to play "archaeologist for the day. No you can't actually get in the holes but you can look, touch and feel the artifacts that have been excavated. Recommend you visit on a sunny day and avoid rain. Short little hike from the car park to the site, but easily accessible.

Easy to find with good free parking make this perfect for a Sunday walk. The amphitheatre is particularly interesting and the walls have various information boards that help you picture what the area was like.

In truth there's not a great deal to actually see here, with the exception of the fairly impressive remains of the walls and the amphitheatre. However with a combination of the excellent interpretation boards around the (extensive) site, the audio guide you can download to your mobile from the site's website, and your own imagination, it's really brought to life...
