Knowsley Safari Park was opened to the public in July 1971 by the 18th Earl of Derby. Then, the `safari park' concept of having visitors in cages (cars) and the animals roaming free based on the drive-through game reserves of East Africa was unique. In 1994, Edward Stanley, the 19th Earl, succeeded to the title. The estate being only 8 miles (13 km) from Liverpool city centre, Knowsley was the first safari park to be built close to a large city. In spite of some understandable apprehension about the possible problems associated with large numbers of animals (including lions) roaming about close to the city, the then County and District councils approved the proposals.In the first two years of opening, the route through Knowsley Safari Park consisted of a 3½ mile (5.6 km) drive, and the main attractions were lions, cheetahs, monkeys, giraffes, zebra, elephants and various antelopes. The park proved immensely popular, so in 1973 an extension, including a further 1½ miles (2.4km) of road, was built and opened. This allowed more animals to be added to the collection on display along the now 5-mile- (8 km) long route, including herds of camels, buffalo and white rhino as well as a group of tigers.A few modifications to the original design have had to be made for safety and display reasons. The tigers and lions are now displayed in enclosures within the game reserves, and the elephants have their own paddock in the walk around section at the end of the safari drive. We also have a car friendly route around the outside of the monkey jungle for visitors who do not wish to have a close encounter with our baboons. Knowsley Safari Park has become one of Merseyside's premier leisure attractions, winning several awards for tourism and it's animal husbandry.

Had a great day here... We had the lions right next to our car and it was brilliant.
It wasn't too busy which was a bonus in the restaurant with our pram and toddler!
I would recommend going the "monkey friendly" route if you don't want your car damaged (our wipers were snapped) I've saw people have a good moan...

Visited on a Friday afternoon so was quite quiet and we were able to drive around at our own pace. The weather was a bit overcast and a few of the animals didn't seem to be out.
Seen a fair few animals though and had to laugh at the camels obstructing the road in their part of the safari and...

Really ggod day out for all the family who's ages ranged from 7 to 70. We drove around slow so we have a really good look araound. We went through the monkey enclosure and it was fab although the little monkeys do pull on your windscreen wipers... Shows where fab and the staff are very interesting.

Kids old and young will love the safari just remember to keep Windows up - so don't go on a hot day unless good air conditioning- and make sure car insurance up-to-date - monkeys love aerials and wipers.

This was the second safari park that I had taken my grandsons aged 9 and 10 to. The animals were great but the let down was the carnival rides that were on offer with only about 8 in total. You can buy an all day band for £10 or pay £2 per ride but with only a few that we're...

A spacious safari, with lots of animals and well laid out track to drive around. The tatched roofed entrance sets the tone for the visit. Such a fun day out, and you can go round the park again if you missed an animal, the price to get in is a bit dear in my opinion but still will be back, great for the kids aswell, I advise you if you don't want your car wrecked I would miss out the monkey bit, but you can...
