“An Art Gallery Like No Other---Public And Private Spaces Seamlessly Combined!”
5.0 of 5 bubblesJun 2018
This is an extremely stunning gallery, inside and out, and art lovers really should stop here to enjoy the changing exhibitions, airy, modern space, and to meet the friendly owner, artist Julie Oakes, who lives there with her partner. What I found interesting is that the public space and private areas are integrated, because Julie considers the entire gallery her home. And her large paintings and sculptures are displayed throughout. Headbones Gallery has about 5-6 rotating exhibitions a year. A friend and I attended an evening opening reception and dinner in connection with an exhibition of works on paper by five artists from Lodz, Poland---four of whom were in attendance! The gallery's high ceilings and white walls were a perfect setting for some of the larger and more insistent pieces, while a couple of smaller spaces were better suited to more intimate works that demanded a closer look. This exhibition of Polish artists ends on September 23rd. The gallery is open daily, except Sunday and Monday, from noon to 6 p.m. It's probably the most unique gallery (in terms of its space and presentation of artworks) in the entire Okanagan Valley. Tip: The drive up to the gallery, on Old Kamloops Road overlooking the small but attractive Swan Lake just north of Vernon, is quite steep. There is a small parking area for your vehicle, but then you have to walk up a very steep path to get to the gallery. Exhausting, but very much worth it when you arrive out of breath!

When you walk into headbones, you've entered an edgy, stimulating artistic environment that also succeeds at being intimate and inviting. Julie Oakes is, herself, a brilliant artist, and her own artwork is featured throughout the gallery. At the same time, Headbones has fantastic, ever changing exhibits of other living artists, both from the Okanagan and around the world. You will not be disappointed! Your hosts are welcoming, the view of Swan Lake is stunning, and your experience will be absolutely fanastic. If you can time your visit for when a live music event is happening, then you've truly hit the jackpot of cultural experiences in the North Okanagan.

when I was new to town, I visited the public gallery and was completely ignored by all staff. I attended a show at Headbones and the hosts made a special point to talk to me, and every single person who attended. The art is amazing and the views are stunning. World class art facility with knowledgable owners makes for a repeat attendance. The gallery is open most days, and the owners are always willing to accommodate groups or travelling /tourists on short notice.

The Headbones Gallery is located near Swan Lake on Old Kamloops Road. If heading towards Vernon, it will be on the right hand side. It's a bit hidden and the road up is steep, so you may need to drive slowly and search for their sign. There's a small parking area off to the side. The gallery itself is amazing! There is no admission cost and it is open to the public during their designated hours. I had assumed it was just an art gallery at first, but it appears to be an artist's residence. I loved the design of the building, which I later found out was created by the owner. It's modern and brightly lit and has enough wall space to display a wide range of artwork. The art exhibited is beautiful and definitely worth stopping by for! Although I was not looking to purchase anything and did not have the budget to do so, there were multiple pieces I just wanted to take home with me! Julie Oakes was very welcoming and pleasant to chat with as she talked about some of her artwork and concepts. I really enjoyed my visit!

The drive way is a bit hidden and the steps up a bit steep
( although there is a handicap drop off area) but this place is Fantastic.! Don't miss the chance to see the special exhibits and the premanent collection- and Julie Oakes back storage room.
There are also frequent intimate entertainments and concerts.

I hadn't heard of Headbones Gallery until one of my favorite musicians, Judy Rose was playing there. We took in a concert with the three divas and thoroughly enjoyed it. This is a small, intimate venue for approximately 50 people. You can bring your own wine or beer, so you truly feel like you are right at home. Book early as space is very limited.
