Best part is the history behind the way they build the cathedral. And the restaurants around and the ambiance is incredible!!!
you really have to be a collector of churches to care about this cathedral. but if you're in the centro, you might as well pass through it and check it off your list!

Picture Perfect. I enjoyed just sitting in the church for a bit. It was peaceful and the structure is beautiful. I think I...

Built in 1561-1598 with such grand architecture. Pope John Paul visited there and is pictured kneeling and praying.! People go in to sit and pray at any time of the day. What a nice place to meditate with the coolness of the stone walls and all the ornate statues and plaques, and arches.
Like many of the reviews previously written, the size of the church and it's history is impressive. If you look closely, you can find some of the stones taken from the mayan temples (they have the original carvings on them). The sheer size of the walls etc. is amazing....
Nice and old architecture in the middle of Merida town, but nothing special. Good for a quick visit.
A piece of history! I have visited this cathedral several times & it never gets old, its a beautiful piece of history.
Be sure to go inside the Cathedral for spectacular alter. Religious holidays are especially a draw, with processions and celebrations.
Although the interior of this cathedral is rather basic what will grab your attention are the massive (and stunning) columns. The stone work is really impressive and this cathedral is worth the visit for its uniqueness.
