Booked a tour via the internet in English before we went. The place is well organised and looked very well kept. Our guide apologised for her English - evidently it was the first tour she'd done in the language. She shouldn't have worried; her English was excellent, and her enthusiasm for the subject was infectious. This is an awesome place,... More

There was such a feeling of walking in the footsteps of our distant (up to 25,000 years ago) ancestors here it made me shiver. Very good tour, even though we heard it in French as opposed to English it was easy enough to get the jist of what was being said and the guide was lovely and very helpful making... More

Wonderful - very informative. Marvellous to see the ancient cave paintings, and wonder about life was like thousands of years ago.

I guess that we were exceptionally lucky but Pech Merle had only been open for a couple of days this season and we almost had the place to ourselves. In fact we were the only guests for our wonderful guide Clementine who, with great knowledge and charm, lead us through these magical caves with the extraordinary wall paintings and foot... More

One of the most spectacular sights in the world. The ancient cave paintings (25,000 + years old!) took my breath away. We also saw the calcified footprint of a pre-Ice Age adolescent-- amazing!!! We've visited some other caves with ancient wall paintings but Grotte du Pech-Merle remains our favorite-- and one of our favorite experiences we've ever had in years... More

I love caves, the prehistoric art was incredible. Tour guide lolly gagged. Take a sweater and sneakers. Go in the morning if you can so you can enjoy many other sites in the area.

This is the most amazing collection of prehistoric cave paintings anyone is likely to see. The skill of the artists 25,000 yrs BC has to be seen to be believed. A must-do venue (whilst its still open to the public).

visiting this amazing painted cave was extra-ordinary. The cave itself, with stalagtites and stalagmites was itself interesting to see but the paintings of horses, buffalo, mammoths - from around 25000 years ago - something else. . The handprints were astonishing as were the preserved footprints in the mud. Oh, if these images could talk, the visit leaves you with a... More

When we arrived early for the first tour of the day, we found the cafe closed and then the ticket office opened late. The first tour is 1/2 hour later. If we knew this we wouldn't have been there early. Instead of showing the "Very informative film" before the tour as the brochures said, it was after and due to... More
